Introduction

SmileJourney is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application ("App"). Please read this policy carefully. By using SmileJourney, you consent to the practices described herein.

Information We Collect

Information You Provide

• Account data: Email address, display name, and optional profile picture when you create an account via Apple Sign-In.
• Treatment data: Treatment start date, total tray count, current tray number, aligner cadence, and treatment notes.
• Photos: Progress photos you take within the app (front, left, and right angles). These are stored locally on your device by default. SmileJourney does not perform any face detection, facial recognition, or biometric analysis on your photos.
• Wear time data: Daily aligner wear and unwear session logs.
• Notes and journal entries: Text notes, symptom tags, and weekly check-in data.

Information Collected Automatically

• Device information: Device model, operating system version, and unique device identifiers.
• Usage data: App interactions, feature usage patterns, screen navigation, and session duration. This is collected by our own analytics service, which we run ourselves rather than a third party, and is tied to a random identifier created when you install the app — not to your name, email or Apple ID. Deleting the app discards that identifier. You can turn this off at any time under Settings → Privacy → Share Anonymous Usage Data.
• Install source: If you installed SmileJourney after tapping an Apple Search Ads advertisement, Apple's AdServices framework tells us the campaign, ad group, and keyword that brought you here. This uses Apple's privacy-preserving attribution token, not the advertising identifier (IDFA), and it does not track you across other apps or websites. We do not ask for App Tracking Transparency permission because we do not track you.
• Advertising effectiveness: If you installed SmileJourney after tapping an advertisement on another platform, we report a single coarse number to Apple's SKAdNetwork indicating roughly how far you got in the app — for example, that you completed setup or started a subscription. Apple forwards this to the advertising network on our behalf, aggregated across many people and with a delay, so that neither we nor the network can connect it back to you. It contains nothing about your treatment, photos, or notes.

How We Use Your Information

• To provide and maintain the SmileJourney service, including treatment tracking, photo sessions, and wear time monitoring.
• To sync your data across your Apple devices when you enable iCloud Sync (premium feature).
• To send you notifications such as photo reminders, wear time alerts, and tray change reminders (with your permission).
• To improve the app experience through anonymized analytics.
• To respond to your support requests and communications.
• To comply with legal obligations.

Information Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We may share information in the following circumstances:

• Apple iCloud: If you enable iCloud Sync, your treatment data is stored in your private iCloud CloudKit container. Apple manages this data under their own privacy policy.
• TelemetryDeck (versions before 1.1.2 only): Earlier versions of the app sent anonymized usage analytics to TelemetryDeck. Version 1.1.2 and later send analytics only to our own service and nothing to TelemetryDeck.
• Apple (AdServices): If you arrived through an Apple Search Ads advertisement, we exchange Apple's attribution token with Apple to learn which campaign it was. No information about you is sent to Apple in this exchange.
• Advertising networks, via Apple SKAdNetwork: Where we advertise on platforms other than Apple, Apple passes those platforms an aggregated, delayed measure of how effective the advertisement was. We never send them your data directly.
• Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, regulation, or legal process.
• Business transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred.

Data Storage and Security

• All photos and treatment data are stored locally on your device using SwiftData.
• If iCloud Sync is enabled, data is encrypted in transit and at rest via Apple's CloudKit infrastructure.
• We do not operate external servers that store your personal health or photo data.
• Payment processing is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not collect or store payment information.

Face Data and Biometric Information

SmileJourney does not collect, use, store, or share any face data or biometric information.

• The app does not use face detection, facial recognition, or any form of biometric analysis technology.
• Photos you take within the app are stored solely on your device (and in your private iCloud container if you enable iCloud Sync). They are never uploaded to, processed by, or accessible from our servers or any third-party servers.
• No facial geometry, face maps, face templates, or other biometric identifiers are ever derived from your photos.
• We do not use Apple's Vision framework, ARKit face tracking, or any other face analysis APIs.
• Your photos remain entirely under your control and are never used for machine learning, AI training, or any analytical purpose.

Your Rights

• Access: You can view all your data within the app at any time.
• Deletion: You can delete your account and all associated data from within the app. Data removal is completed within 30 days.
• Correction: You can update your treatment information and profile at any time.
• Notifications: You can manage or disable push notifications through your device settings.

CCPA Compliance

If you are a California resident, you have the right to request disclosure of data collected about you, request deletion of your data, and opt out of the sale of your personal information. We do not sell personal information.

GDPR Compliance

If you are a resident of the European Economic Area, you have the right to access, rectify, or erase your personal data, restrict or object to processing, and data portability. To exercise these rights, please contact us.

Children's Privacy

SmileJourney is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected data from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly.

Third-Party Advertising

SmileJourney does not display third-party advertisements.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the app or via email. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
